Coca-Cola & Microsoft. Hottest global brands

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Coca-Cola and Microsoft are the two top global brands, according to an annual ranking by BusinessWeek and branding company Interbrand. Coca-Cola has kept the No. 1 spot and Microsoft has stayed No. 2 for the last seven years.

IBM, GE and Nokia made it into the top 5. Google is climbing and has reached the 20th position; the search giant has raised its brand value 44 percent compared with last year and 45 percent since 2005, breaking into the top 20 in just two years.

The ranking, called Best Global Brands 2007, compiles a list of 100 companies worldwide, a fair amount of them from the U.S.

But how’s the value of the brand calculated? The ranking is based on the assumption of how much money the brand will generate in the future. Key issues are branding and marketing strategies as well as financial forecasting.

The big losers this year are Ford, which dropped 19 percent compared with 2006; Gap with 15 percent; and Kodak with 12 percent.

These are the top 10 companies from the list and their brand value in 2007:

1. Coca-Cola, $65 million
2. Microsoft, $59 million
3. IBM, $57 million
4. General Electric, $52 million
5. Nokia, $34 million
6. Toyota, $32 million
7. Intel, $31 million
8. McDonald’s, $29 million
9. Disney, $29 million
10. Mercedes-Benz, $24 million

Microsoft replaces Google as Digg’s main advertising partner

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Original Story can be found here:

News aggregator Digg has chosen Microsoft to serve up display and contextual ads on its Web site where people share and rank their favorite news items, the companies announced Wednesday.

Digg looked at Microsoft, Google and Yahoo before making a choice, said Digg Chief Executive Jay Adelson. “Microsoft came to the table with the best solution for our needs. We even spoke with Facebook, who we view as having similarities with our model, and they’re very pleased with their relationship with Microsoft.”

Microsoft replaces Google as Digg’s main advertising partner, although Digg will continue to collaborate with Federated Media Publishing, which links up advertisers with blogs and other sites looking to monetize their content. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal is a three-year contract.

The revenue-sharing deal is a win for Microsoft, which last year snagged a similar deal with popular social-networking site Facebook

Microsoft executives were obviously pleased with the news. “They’re such an innovator in this space and have such a unique audience that we can learn so much from them,” Adam Sohn, director for Microsoft’s online services group, said of Digg.

Digg co-founder Kevin Rose wrote in a blog posting: “This move gives us an advertising partner with a larger organization and a more scalable technology platform to keep pace with Digg’s growth. Best of all, it lets the Digg team completely focus on new feature development.”

Microsoft Increases revenue by 13% - Surpasses $50 Billion in annual sales.

Double-digit revenue and EPS growth fueled by Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system

Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $13.37 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2007, a 13% increase over the same period of the prior year. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $0.31. Excluding $0.08 of previously announced charges primarily related to Xbox 360™ warranty policies, earnings per share would have been $0.39, an increase of 26% over the same period of the prior year when also adjusted for certain items.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2007, Microsoft announced revenue of $51.12 billion, a 15% increase over the prior year. Diluted earnings per share for the year were $1.42. Excluding certain items, earnings per share would have been $1.49, an increase of 17% over the prior year when also adjusted for certain items. $31 billion in cash, or approximately 175% of operating cash flow, was returned to shareholders during the year through share buybacks and dividends.

“Surpassing $50 billion in annual sales is a testament to the innovation and value that our product groups delivered into the marketplace, as well as the outstanding execution by our field sales, marketing teams and partners to bring that value to life with our customers,” said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft.  “In fiscal year 2008, we will continue to drive growth through new product offerings, such as Windows Server® 2008, Visual Studio® 2008, SQL Server™ 2008, Office PerformancePoint™ Server 2007, and Microsoft Dynamics™ Live CRM.”

HTML theory

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

If you a serious about programming in HTML and CSS then there is someone I need you to meet. The Tag’s name is “div”. <Div> will help you to visually create “divisions” or space on your page. Before you can start using <div>’s you must also know that they like to be contained. What I mean by this is that they like to have <div>’s within <div>’s. When creating a page I recommend creating a “wrapper”. Wrappers are another name for containers. For example: I recommend that you create a page wrapper, a header wrapper, a main body wrapper, and footer wrapper. This is the typical web page layout. First you would create the page wrapper <div> and then put the Header, MainBody, and Footer <div>s within the page wrapper. Here is the code needed for making this basic setup.

<div id=pageWrapper>

<div id=headerWrapper>

</div>

<div id=mainBodyWrapper>

</div>

<div id=footerWrapper>

</div>

</div>

Now that you have created these <div> objects you can now use CSS to effect the style and layout.

For Example - If you wanted to center the page you can physically move the <div id=mainPageWrapper> to the center of the screen. Because all <div>’s are inside the div they too are centered. This process is often called Cascading. Next lesson we will look at how we can force the page to be compatible in all browsers using CSS

HTML & CSS elearning Series comming to Winnipeg Experts

Friday, July 6th, 2007

I am going to give back to the digital community. I just recently found out that I’m a Visual Spatial learner. I am going to be giving examples that I believe will help VSL’s and non-VSL’s a like.

The first few Blog posting are going to give definitions of HTML code. This will be the building blocks for the rest of the topics I will be diving into. I am also going to be creating an eLearning Catagory will contain all the blog entries on coding. My examples I will be providing will be using Dreamweaver to code the pages. I must warn you that you might be tempted to use the “Designer” mode!! Do not do this as I find Dreamweaver does some pretty weird things. Then when things go wrong (and trust me once you start working with Div tags they will) you will be happy that you took the 20 minutes to learn basic HTML!!!.
