Dual Boot Windows XP and Windows Vista

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

I took on this challenge the other night. I was surprised to find out that the install was VERY easy to do.

The one thing to keep in mind is that you need to make sure it is being installed to a Primary partition on the computer. You also must be using a full version of the software rather then an upgrade copy.

Tomorrow I will talk about some of the eases and troubles of installing the device drivers.

Convert and Make Applications Compliant and Run on U3 USB Flash Drive with PackageFactory for U3

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Well here’s a dandy little program. Using the programs I listed before you can convert the portable programs to a format that works with U3 software that comes on at least 1/2 of the Flash devices out there. You can download the U3 USB program converter program directly from my website.

Great apps for USB Flash drives

http://portableapps.com/suite

Just remember this link. I like the custom configuration because I don’t have to completely fill my USB drive with applications that I prob won’t ever need. I did how ever install 7-Zip, Firefox, and ClamAV. Now you will always have these programs where ever you go. You install these programs by extracting the files and then copying them to your USB drive. For example. If your USB drive is “F:” then you would copy the whole program folder to: F:\PortableApps. Restart the “Portable Apps Menu”.  You will see them installed in the the menu now :)

If you compile it they will come….

I am talking about people that want to exploit your software and really piss you off. If you make sure your computer is up to date most of these issues will never effect you. As OS flaws continue to decline (Well at least with Microsoft OS’s), hackers are looking to other pieces of software to gain access to your machine. In the past few months I have seen that there have been an increase in flaws in other programs like Norton and Firefox.
Just to prove that security flaws are found in almost every piece of software I am linking to two stories today.

  • Firefox - These flaws were found in all browsers that are version 2.0.1 and earlier. This effects over 1/2 of the Firefox users out there.
  • Trend Antivirus - Although in testing Trend has always been one of my favorite antivirus solutions today there was a critical exploit found. Anyone with Trend products installed should make sure that the program is up todate.

Free software for Everyone

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Because I was installing all my software on my new machine I figured “Hey! Why don’t I let my readers know about the great freeware I install”. Here are some of the tools I just can’t live without on my PC:

PDFcreator - This software installs a virtual printer similar to the one you would get with the program Adobe Acrobate. It is perfect for making PDF so much so I have not used Acrobate in years.

CDBurnerXP Pro 3 - This is a Free CD & DVD Burning software. It could be used to replace Nero or Easy CD creator. It is also very stable.

ORB - I use this program to play MP3’s on my Wii and Stream audio and video while I am at my day job. The quality of the stream is great and you can even share your stream with friends.

AVG Antivirus - Although I don’t use this virus protection it is still an ok solution for home users. If you really want top of the line antivirus software look to: Trend, Kapersky or Nod32.

DivX - A must to install if you download movies off the net.

Dr. DivX - A now free tool to convert Video into DivX.

The Gimp - A free photoshop type program.

Aidia32 - Although it’s no longer being developed it is still a great program to find out all about what’s in your machine.

DoubleDriver - Allows you to backup your drivers at anytime. If you ever need to re-install this tool is invaluable

Windows Vista, Office 2007, and Intel Dual Core Rig

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Well the parts of my new machine arrived yesterday. That got me excited. What else could a guy ask for? How about a few licenses of Windows Vista Enterprise? How about a Office 2007? How about your girlf friend helping you with setting up your computer?

The install for Vista went well and I will be documenting my experiences with it. So far the major issues with Vista that I’ve read are to do with games that use OpenGL. OpenGL is run in a type of emulation mode care of the new Direct X 10. Although this will effect games like Prey most other games you will see very little issues.

Delila was able to start the machine up and do a full install of Vista in under 20 Minutes. This is one area Microsoft has worked VERY hard at. The installed asked what the computer name should be, what my name was and if it was ok to activate my copy of Vista automatically. The install went smooth as well as installing all the drivers for my devices.
