Backuping up with Vista and Virtual Machines…

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

I am really glad to see this become reality. As a system admin I am always looking for ways of making my life easier. Just the other day I completely programmed and setup the deployment of the newly released Adobe Reader software to over 60 clients in 5 minutes. On a side note, yes Adobe renamed “Adobe Acrobat Reader” to just “Adobe Reader”.

When I “End of life” a computer we come across the issue of backing up the machine and restoring files. Things like Norton Ghost are great and have their purposes but the down fall of these imaging type programs is that you need to restore the WHOLE image first to hardware similar to the machine that you had backed up. Plus they cost tons of $$$$
The backup utility that comes with XP is pretty good in that it uses a technology called shadow copy. It can actually backup most files even if they are in use. The backup software in XP can save the backup to single files that must be opened with backup software.

The big buzz in IT right now is using software to create Virtual Machines. While I am not going to go into why Virtual Machines are so useful for the most part, I am going to show you how using the new Vista Backup and Virtual machines to backup a machine completely. Then using Virtual Server, Mount the backup as a non-bootable hard drive and restore 1 file from the whole backup without all the over head used with a typical backup program.

Here’s the link to how to do it.

Extracting the .msi file from an Adobe install

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

I’ve just found out where Adobe acrobat saves its .msi files to when it uncompresses everything. As you know you can deploy applications through group poilicy easily using .msi files. Once you download and start the installs, Adobe saves all its temporay files to this location:

XP —– “%USERPROFILE%\\Local Settings\Temp\1\Adobe Reader 8.0″

Vista — “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Netopsystems\temp\Adobe Reader 8.0″

Once the extraction happens copy the files in this location to somewhere else. Go to my FAQ to find out how to quickly deploy this file to hundreds of machines using Group Policy.

Microsoft knows where it’s at…

Monday, December 11th, 2006

As I have been saying, the Nintendo Wii has gone where no other console system has gone before. Well Microsoft just upped the ante! They are now letting grass-roots programmers create their own video games. Using the xBox live connection they could then send the games to other friend almost making a YouTube type environment for gaming. It will be very interesting to see how well this plays out. You can get the full article here.
