Safari is NOT faster then Internet Explorer.

Monday, June 11th, 2007

I am always willing to give apple the benifit of the doubt. Today I read information from a Mac conference that Steve Jobs said that Safari was 2x’s as fast as Internet Explorer and Firefox. I really don’t know how he was measuring performance because all my monitoring of Internet Explorer vs Safari vs Firefox… Safari came in last. Internet Explorer came in first and then Firefox was in a distant second. Safari’s interface really sucks (in my own opinion) and looks very much like iTunes. I do have to say that this is a BETA of Safari 3 I was looking at. In my own opinion it has quite the way to go. I will continue to use REAL world tests on the this browser and will let you know if anything changes.

Extracting the .msi file from an Adobe install

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

I’ve just found out where Adobe acrobat saves its .msi files to when it uncompresses everything. As you know you can deploy applications through group poilicy easily using .msi files. Once you download and start the installs, Adobe saves all its temporay files to this location:

XP —– “%USERPROFILE%\\Local Settings\Temp\1\Adobe Reader 8.0″

Vista — “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Netopsystems\temp\Adobe Reader 8.0″

Once the extraction happens copy the files in this location to somewhere else. Go to my FAQ to find out how to quickly deploy this file to hundreds of machines using Group Policy.

What is Second Life?

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Second Life allows you to create a virtual life, inside a virtual world. It’s a program you can download here. Here’s the kicker. It has it’s own Virtual Currency. Think of this as “The Sims” online but you can buy “Physical Products” with your virtual Currency. Companies like Dell have already create a virtual store and have bought real estate in the game. The thing that scares things like governments is that there is no law for taxing things that are bought “Virtually”. The neat thing for example is that in the virtual world you can go right to the Virtual Dell store… Walk inside… see you PC being built… You can supposedly look inside the machine as it’s being made and then you can pay for it. Dell will then send you a machine in the mail exactly how you wanted it configured.

It also allow you to meet and talk to people across the globe.

While this seems kind of a neat idea I find I have a hard enough time looking after one life never mind a “Second” one.

To all the network admins out there…

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

We all have been told to plan, plan and plan again. I have been using Visio to ocument the networks I work at. The thing I love about Visio is the amount of pre-made shapes and layouts you get right out of the box. (I am talking about Visio 2003). I just recently found out that you can now download a plugin for Visio that will allow the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) to interact with Visio!

MBSA download link.

Visio MBSA plugin.

Once you download and install both items you should be able to see MBSA as an option on the drop down menu. This will only display when you have clicked on a computer object that has it’s IP address pre-filled. On pre-made Visio Drawing this is very quick. For people that don’t have a Visio drawing this might take a bit of time.

On a side note does anyone know of a “network spider” type program that will look across the network and create a Visio Drawing? Ideally it should pre-fill the Serial Number, Hard drive sizes etc? I found a few that did an OK job but the document was normally saved as older version of Visio that you can’t insert as much info into. Extra bonus points to the person who lets me know of one that is opensource or Free. :)

New Nvidia Cards for Sale!

Friday, November 10th, 2006

Well the new Direct X 10 cards are upon us! Diger Direct sent me out a little newsletter letting me know they are selling them now. These bad boys as I stated the other day are almost a foot long so if you buy one make sure that your case will be able to hold them. Also PLEASE note that you have a proper power supply! These guys take a bit of power. Nvidia recommends a power supply of at least 450W with the 12v of at least 30A for the 8800GTX. The 8800GTS has a recommendation of 400W with the 12v of at least 26A.
Here’s the sales link.

I recommend the eVGA card with their lifetime waranty. You also get a Might and Magic Game. M&M games are always the best. The PNY card offers a no frills package without games and a 3 year warranty for less money for shoppers on somewhat of a limited budget.
